{"id":911,"date":"2013-08-27T01:00:08","date_gmt":"2013-08-26T23:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/majek.mamy.to\/?p=911"},"modified":"2013-12-04T23:38:09","modified_gmt":"2013-12-04T22:38:09","slug":"tricopter-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/majek.sh\/en\/tricopter-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Tricopter &#8211; part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/en\/tricopter\/\" title=\"Tricopter\">part one<\/a> of this build log I wrote about most mechanical things you should do to build a tricopter, also on <a href=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/en\/tricopter-part-1-5\/\" title=\"Tricopter part 1.5 :-)\">addenium<\/a> I wrote about my errors in making first part of tricopter (you should read it!).<br \/>\nNow, it&#8217;s time to finish it.<br \/>\nIn spite of my feeling that I did most of the work, part two took more time than first.<\/p>\n<h1>Preparing and connecting ESCs<\/h1>\n<p>I bought for this tricopter cheapest ESCs available \ud83d\ude42 : <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/hobbyking\/store\/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=6456&#038;aff=78124\" target=\"_blank\">Hobbyking SS Series 15-18A<\/a><br \/>\nIf you have some electronic skills you should flash it with <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/sim-\/tgy\" target=\"_blank\">SimonK dedicated firmware<\/a>. If not, I recommend you just use a little more expensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/hobbyking\/store\/__714__711__Multi_Rotors_Parts-Speed_Controllers.html\" target=\"_blank\">Turnigy Multistar ESCs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Flashing my ESCs with SimonK I described in my <a href=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/en\/hobbyking-supersimple-hk-18a-and-simonk-firmware\/\" title=\"HobbyKing SuperSimple HK-18A and SimonK firmware\">previous blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On arms I connected motors directly to ESCs removing original short cables.<\/p>\n<p>On tail I soldered motor cables to ESC&#8217;s cables because this part moves and longer cables are less stressed and less prone to wear out. Before fastening cable for tail, make sure that it&#8217;s loose in all sway\/servo position. Also don&#8217;t forget to fasten cables to yaw sway &#8211; cables should not move directly near motor.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/tricopter-motors-connected-to-escs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/tricopter-motors-connected-to-escs-640x452.jpg\" alt=\"Tricopter  - motors connected to ESCs\" width=\"640\" height=\"452\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-917\" srcset=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/tricopter-motors-connected-to-escs-640x452.jpg 640w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/tricopter-motors-connected-to-escs-150x106.jpg 150w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/tricopter-motors-connected-to-escs.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h1>Balancing motors and props<\/h1>\n<p>Having ESCs connected to motors and yet separately is good opportunity to balance motors and props.<br \/>\nAt first, simple <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/hobbyking\/store\/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=14774&#038;aff=78124\" target=\"_blank\">servo tester<\/a> should be handy (or you can use transmitter and receiver for this, but it makes things more complicated \ud83d\ude42 ).<\/p>\n<p>First, balance motors with small piece of electric tape or zip-tie :-). There are many films on youtube about how to do it, even with laser as on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PqtUSSdf8b4\" target=\"_blank\">FliteTest video<\/a>. Personally, I use my hand to feel vibrations. I used earlier Android phone with <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.lul.vibration.monitoring\" target=\"_blank\">Vibration Monitoring application<\/a>, but I feel that my hand is more sensitive \ud83d\ude42<br \/>\nWhen you know on which side you schould put some weight, put sticker there and start balancing procedure again until you&#8217;ll be satisfied (or bored) \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>There are my motors with stickers:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-motors-balanced.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-motors-balanced-640x433.jpg\" alt=\"Tricopter - motors balanced\" width=\"640\" height=\"433\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1095\" srcset=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-motors-balanced-640x433.jpg 640w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-motors-balanced-150x101.jpg 150w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-motors-balanced.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Second, choose the best balanced motor and use it for balancing propellers. It&#8217;s really needed.<br \/>\nFor pointing how much weight I should put to one blade of prop, I use the same electric tape as for motors. But for making it permanent I use Scotch Magic Tape.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-porops-balanced.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-porops-balanced-640x349.jpg\" alt=\"Tricopter - props balanced\" width=\"640\" height=\"349\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-porops-balanced-640x349.jpg 640w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-porops-balanced-150x81.jpg 150w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-porops-balanced.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of props, I use GWS 10&#215;4.7 genuine props from local hobby store. At start I used GWS RD-1047 from HobbyKing (no longer available but the same as from local store except colour), then I bought also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/hobbyking\/store\/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=20863&#038;aff=78124\" target=\"_blank\">1047R Right Hand Rotation<\/a> which I think was a mistake &#8211; these props are very flexible and I have mixed feeling about them. I thought that having one prop with opposite direction is a good idea (tail motor will be more staight), but not with these props \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n<h1>Bottom plate (camera and battery mount)<\/h1>\n<p>I had a ready made part from glass fiber laminate in appropriate dimensions, to I just used it &#8211; as you can see, there are some strange holes because of that.<br \/>\nThe thing I had to make, there are 6 small half holes on sides of this plate. Use 4.6mm for good and strong connection.<\/p>\n<p>I put <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/hobbyking\/store\/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=9374&#038;aff=78124\" target=\"_blank\">velcro<\/a> on bottom plate for good good mechanical battery connection:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-bottom-plate-with-velcro.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-bottom-plate-with-velcro-640x365.jpg\" alt=\"Tricopter - bottom plate with velcro\" width=\"640\" height=\"365\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-bottom-plate-with-velcro-640x365.jpg 640w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-bottom-plate-with-velcro-150x85.jpg 150w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-bottom-plate-with-velcro.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h1>Power cables<\/h1>\n<p>Having removed shrink-wrap from ESC, I also removed short stock cables and soldered longer ones using Turnigy Pure-Silicone Wire 14AWG (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/hobbyking\/store\/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=9678&#038;aff=78124\" target=\"_blank\">RED<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/hobbyking\/store\/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=9679&#038;aff=78124\" target=\"_blank\">BLACK<\/a>). 2 meters from each of them should be enough. Then I put new shrink-wrap on ESCs:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-esc-with-wires-and-shrink-wrap.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-esc-with-wires-and-shrink-wrap-640x312.jpg\" alt=\"Tricopter - esc with wires and shrink-wrap\" width=\"640\" height=\"312\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1088\" srcset=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-esc-with-wires-and-shrink-wrap-640x312.jpg 640w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-esc-with-wires-and-shrink-wrap-150x73.jpg 150w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-esc-with-wires-and-shrink-wrap.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Soldering other end of all cables is little tricky. As usual, David&#8217;s idea is great also for this problem: put all ends together and wrap it up using thin wire. FC should be placed exactly on center of gravity (CG), so I had to calculate it.<br \/>\nThe easiest way of calculation CG of triangle is just draw it and draw lines between each apex and middle of opposite side. The crossing of each of these lines is CG:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-cg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-cg-600x480.jpg\" alt=\"Tricopter - CG\" width=\"600\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1087\" srcset=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-cg-600x480.jpg 600w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-cg-150x119.jpg 150w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-cg.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And this is a place when my own adventure begins \ud83d\ude42<br \/>\nDavid is using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/hobbyking\/store\/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=24723&#038;aff=78124\" target=\"_blank\">KK2.0 FC board<\/a> but this board has only gyroscopes and accelerometers, so I choose cheaper one with more sensors (obvious choice for me:-) ): <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/hobbyking\/store\/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=27033&#038;aff=78124\" target=\"_blank\">MultiWii 328P Flight Controller w\/FTDI &#038; DSM2 Port<\/a>. More info about this board I wrote in my <a href=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/en\/multiwii-328p-controller-from-hk\/\" title=\"MultiWii 328P controller from HK\">earlier post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>First move is to secure barometer (altimeter). Connecting it all together could be not very good idea, expecially with such long cables.<\/p>\n<p>So, tail ESC use it&#8217;s BEC only for powering servo. I made custom connector from 2&#215;3 pin header, connecting power lines (+\/-) from ESC to servo and connect only signal wires to FC. Without ground (-) to avoid ground loop!<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-tail-connector.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-tail-connector-640x386.jpg\" alt=\"Tricopter - tail connector\" width=\"640\" height=\"386\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-tail-connector-640x386.jpg 640w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-tail-connector-150x90.jpg 150w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-tail-connector.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Each connector must be secured somehow, I choose easiest way &#8211; just use electric isolation tape:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-tail-connector-secured.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-tail-connector-secured-640x341.jpg\" alt=\"Tricopter - secured tail connector\" width=\"640\" height=\"341\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1104\" srcset=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-tail-connector-secured-640x341.jpg 640w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-tail-connector-secured-150x80.jpg 150w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-tail-connector-secured.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the right arm, I used just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hobbyking.com\/hobbyking\/store\/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=9685&#038;aff=78124\" target=\"_blank\">30CM Servo Lead Extention<\/a> to connect ESC to FC, so this ESC powers FC. <\/p>\n<p>On tle left arm I used also servo extension, but I cut off power wires (+,-) from it:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-left-connector.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-left-connector-640x381.jpg\" alt=\"Tricopter - left connector\" width=\"640\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1091\" srcset=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-left-connector-640x381.jpg 640w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-left-connector-150x89.jpg 150w, https:\/\/majek.sh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tricopter-left-connector.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then I connected it to FC according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.multiwii.com\/connecting-elements\" target=\"_blank\">Multiwii documentation<\/a> and table on my <a href=\"https:\/\/majek.sh\/en\/multiwii-328p-controller-from-hk\/\" title=\"MultiWii 328P controller from HK\">post about this FC<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>tail motor should be connected to D9 in Arduino, this is D9 or BUZ in this FC<\/li>\n<li>tail servo should be connected to D3 in Arduino, and this is AX4 on this FC<\/li>\n<li>left motor should be connected to D11 (the same on Arduino and this FC)<\/li>\n<li>right motor should be connected to D10 (also the same)<\/li>\n<li>signal from receiver I connected to THR (D2 on Arduino).
